11:46 there is option in unraid to add your own repo :) its on te left I started with TrueNAS Core and bounced off because of bhyve, then i settled on Unraid for last couple years. I'm lucky one with 1-time payment for license and i can upgrade it (i use Plus one for now). I really like how TrueNAS Scale looks and works, but it's better for me to just add single drive to whole array if i need to expand :) Edit: I hope there will be second part for this video as "Community Best NAS" or something.

one correction, zil and slog force writes to the pool to be a multi- step proces step 1 data is stored in arc thats in ram, them its writen to the zil, or slog from ARC then the data is writen to the pool from ram, keeping writes as fast as possiible zil and slog. are 99.999 write only . many early ZFS users still used disks forr slog because early ssd's died quickly under heavy write loads. , ZFS can verify the ram content is correct and ram is always faster than disks or even SSD or NVME, when zil or slog is used, is on zfs pool import, ZFS will see if there is any data in zil or slog that hasn't been written correctly to the pool ithen ZFS writes any data not in the pool i belive in mutli-core systems ZFS can write to to the pool and the zil or slog at the same titme. further improving performance.

Thanks for the great tutorial Tim. I'd been struggling to get either Proxmox or Portainer to work properly behind Traefik, but I got it working by following your video. Question. How do you get something like AdGuard Home or Pi-Hole to work with Traefik? AGH requires a location for the SSL certificates, so how do you get it to read the acme.json file? Also, how do you get AGH to work with DoT and DoH?

Hey Tim, I enjoy your content and look forward to the content you will release to this channel. However, you have missed the mark on this one. To give a bit of background, I have used both TrueNas (for 5 years) and Unraid (for 6 years) and have a completely different experience. 1. (Install) USB backup is available on Unraid. You can back up your USB drive to your array so that even if your drive fails, it can be recovered from your array. Also, I disagree with your take that Unraid should tie the key to the mobo. Unraid's approach has allowed me to upgrade my mobo multiple times without any issues since the key is tied to the USB. 2. (Storage) Since Unraid supports ZFS, it is clear that Unraid is the winner. It offers everything that TrueNAS does in terms of ZFS and more. 3. (Storage) Your performance analysis is entirely biased. You can't forgo Unraid's caching, which is unfair. In use, Unraid is faster. 4. (Storage) You missed the most crucial feature regarding Unraid. Let's say you have all of your parity drives fail (or three drives fail with TrueNas). With Unraid, the data on the other drives is easily accessible; however, with TrueNas, the data would be unrecoverable. 5. (docker/apps support) Unraid allows you to add custom feeds and catalogs. It even supports custom docker compose configs. 6. (docker/apps support) Unraid backups your app's configuration by default, and there are backup solutions to backup the data in your app data. 7. (VMS) Unraids' KVM functionality is much more robust due to its hardware passthrough functionality, which includes passing IOMMU groups like USBs, GPUs, etc. 8. Finally, I'd like to share a personal experience. I had the opportunity to assist the TrueNas team during their rewrite from FreeNas to TrueNas. I didn't enjoy working with their DEV team. They were challenging, and user experience was not their top priority. In contrast, Unraid has a great development team and a friendly, helpful community. Making it easy for anyone getting started or needing help

*Now that unraid has also succumbed to greed and massively increased its prices, the license is too expensive. It's interesting to note that despite the high prices, Unraid still lives from community support, all of whom work for unraid free of charge.*

@@sidbrun_ Unraid uses 99% open-source and essentially just programs the user interface. But the *support and the testing* is done almost entirely by the community - for free, in their spare time.

Thanks a lot Tim! I've been banging my head trying to get this to work for a week. I tried using DuckDNS for the DNS challenge to try doing this all for free, but I couldn't get it to work. So, I caved in and got a cheap domain from Namecheap ($1) and used Cloudflare for the challenge. Then, I couldn't get the production certificate at first after using the staging. I had to change my DNS from Pihole to auto and then it worked. If you are still on the Pihole address, that might be why the acme file doesn't update. Unsure if it was a coincidence or related, but worked for me.

In my opinion anything "subscription", "tiered", "paywall", "as a service", "walled garden" etc loses by default, full stop. I don't require free or open source to be happy, but if you want to sell a product just put on price on it and sell it on it's own merits, let the market decide what's right and reasonable. Regardless of product this contract/credit-card/time-share mentality of pay us forever and ever, often with ransomware level penalties for cancellation, is consumer cancer plain and simple. As such I would even pay for a one-time TrueNAS "license" if it provided useful, additional value to me, no problem whatsoever. Let's Go Team TrueNAS!!! 🤣

One thing you go wrong here is the app store on Unraid isnt managed by limetech. The CA or Community Apps is a third party plugin that you used to have to manually install on the plugins page but because pretty much everyone installed it limetech decided to ship it with unraid in version 6 something. But the App store is still entirely managed by a third party and while limetech has a few plugins in there, they do not control anything that is listed in the app store.

Thanks to you and a couple of other RUclipsrs I got into running some virtual machines, Docker (I even tried Kubernetes, for a short time) and more recently Plex. I used a 2nd hand Dell micro PC and ran Hyper-V on the included Windows 11 Pro. I ended up running Plex natively under Windows to allow use of my iGPU for transcoding. Now I'm going to try Proxmox. I have another mini-PC coming today, this time with a 12th gen Intel CPU. So - Plex on its own Ubuntu VM, in a Docker container on an Ubuntu VM or in an LXC container? I think I'll probably start with this helper script but what are the pros and cons of each? And how to pass through the iGPU? Do you have a video on that?
